FIAT 500T (ECU) Engine Control Module by Magneti Marelli (with Radio Remote Controller)

This is a Plug and Play Unit that has been designed to improve the performance of your FIAT 500T. It is designed with OEM Connectors and works with the electronics of your 500T to increase power and engine response. We have this module installed in our own car and can verify that it fits and works as promised.

The manufacturer states that the unit typically ads between 25-40 Horsepower to the ABARTH and slightly less for the 500T . 

We have done our own dyno test and you can see them posted along with additional comments on our forum (link located at the top of the page - "Forum".

Here are the details of the controller:

The unit is activated only after the engine has reached operating temperature.   

The unit deactivates in case of abnormal and prolonged elevated engine temperatures and overheating.   

Gold Plated Pins are used in electrical connectors for zero current leakage.   

All the connectors are like the Original Equipment connectors.   

Limits the increase of power to be within the limits of mechanical gearbox and clutch of the car.   

Receives data from the original ECU and sensors and reinterprets them by changing boost pressure, fuel flow, injection timing and ignition advance.

This version of the module will come with a pre programmed Radio Remote Controler. With the Remote Controller you willl be able to switch from the Race Tune -  (button #2) to Performance Tune - (button #1) down to stock (button #1).

Please make sure the car is in stationary position when you switch between settings.

Details on the Radio Remote Controler:

The Magneti Marelli Radio Control Module will allow modifying the tune of your car while sitting inside.

You can select to turn off the module and have the car operate at the stock factory setting. You can select to up the power of the car to a more aggressive tune that will provide your 500T with an increase in power and torque or you can choose to select a third level which the most aggressive setting maximizing the power upgrade to max.

By adding on the Radio Control Module you will have full control of the performance of your 500T at your fingertips. This Radio Controler Module will arrive pre programed to your MM Engine Module and will be ready to use. It is about the size of a regular keyfob and can be easily attached to your keychain. The remote is designed to integrate seamlessly with your Magneti Marelli Engine Control Module. The redmote is included in this listing. We have this optional remote controller with the Magneti Marelli Engine Control Module on our own car and can truly tell the difference. The difference is night and day and in our opinion the optional remote is a great option.

Without the remote your module will arrive with the 70% Race Tune Preset. You will not be able to switch back and forth between tunes. With the Remote you will be able to switch back and forth as often as you choose (please make sure the car is in stationary position when you switch).

Q. How do they work?

A. There are two main methods of tuning modern engines, one is by chip tuning or re-mapping, this involves using a special interface to read out the program from the cars computer or ECU and then writing in a new program to increase performance.


The second method is to use an external plug in Tuning Box (Engine Module) or as some people refer to them 'Piggyback ECU', these units connect into the existing wiring of the vehicle generally using original manufacturers connectors, a control unit (Tuning Box) is then attached which can over-ride the signals coming from the engines sensors to the cars ECU and alter them to allow the injectors or common rail to inject more fuel at certain times and increase turbo pressure to keep the air/fuel ratio correct.

These units are generally connected to either the fuel injectors or to the pressure sensor on the injection systems common rail (the common rail is a thin cylinder close to the injectors which holds the fuel at high pressure before feeding it to the injectors) and also to the pressure sensor of the turbo charger allowing us to increase turbo pressure to match the increased fuel.

Q. Some ECU Modules are encased in Metal Boxes, some are encased in Plastic Boxes. Which is better?

The Magneti Marelli ECU Modules are encased in Plastic Boxes. This is superior to the metal boxes available on some other modules. The Magneti Marelli Modules have a specifically made, molded boxes that are fireproof and do a superior job in protecting the motherboard from moisture and heat. As you know it gets hot inside the engine bay of the 500. These boxes provide superior insulation to other handmade metal boxes.

Q. Whats the difference between analogue and digital tuning units?

A. Quite simply the analogue unit has no electronics inside and no processor, its generally made of resistors inside a plastic box with a screw to increase or decrease fuelling, these are very cheap to make and are usually found on auction sites, the risk with these units is that they have no set program to deliver the increased fuel at specific points , instead they just increase fuelling continuously even at idle which can cause the engine to run erratically and over time will likely cause damage and usually create a lot of smoke from the exhaust.

The analogue units generally will not work on quite a large number of modern cars due to the latest intelligent computers running the engine which can detect them and will cause the engine warning lamp to come on and the engine to go into safe mode (greatly reduced power and limited revs).


A digital tuning unit has a microprocessor controlled computer board inside which is programmed with specific parameters for each individual vehicle to obtain the maximum performance without reaching the safety cut off limits set by the manufacturer, each unit is set up on a dynamometer so the results can be accurately measured , the digital unit will also not function until the accelerator pedal is pressed beyond a certain point at which you are demanding extra power , this means that no extra fuel is being added at idle and the extra fuel being injected is reduced again when the engine approaches maximum revs to avoid damage , put simply the digital unit is carefully designed using the latest technology to achieve the maximum performance safely from each individual make and model of vehicle, also the parameters in the digital tuning kit are hard programmed into the control chip so they can never alter over time or temperature.

Q. What kind of increase in performance can I expect from the Magneti Magnetti Engine Module?

A. Magneti Marelli is a FIAT Company and works hand in hand with the engineers of FIAT. By doing so they are able to design and manufacture what is considered by most to be the best tuning module available on the market. The module is designed to work seamlessly with the FIAT Electronic Management System. This unit is fully programmable and can offer you a variety of different tunes to get just the right amount of performance and fuel economy. A similar unit to this one was featured in the ABARTH Venom Concept Car and was tuned to generate approximately 200 HP! While you will not get that kind of a gain with this unit and your 500T, the difference will be significant.

The unit will come preprogramed with the 0-stock, 40% - Performance and 70% - Race Tune. If you are using the Radio Remote Control you will be able to switch back and forth between the settings as you like. If you are getting the unit without the remote control your unit will be set to the 70% - Race Tune.

Q. Why should I buy the Magneti Marelli Engine Module over others that are on the market?

A. There are many good tuning kits available from various companies, but also many very bad ones which may cause serious damage to your engine leaving you out of pocket for hundreds or even thousands of dollars! The Magneti Marelli Engine Module is manufactured by MM which is a FIAT Company. This is considered to be one of the best, if not the best tuning modules available for the FIAT 500T.

Q. Could the unit damage my engine?

A. It should not (per MM). Magneti Marelli units are specifically designed for the FIAT 500 ABARTH. This module is not a generic solution that has been modified to work with the 500T. It has been designed from scratch specifically for the North American Version of the FIAT 500T by Magneti Marelli which is an official FIAT Company. If you use the module as designed it should not have any negative effect on the power train of the vehicle.

You should still take care of your vehicle and drive properly. Abusing the vehicle and driving the vehicle beyond its capabilities can cause damage, so please use caution.

Q. Is the unit difficult to fit if I wanted to fit it myself?

A. Generally not, most can be fitted by a trained technician in about 1-2 hours (including programing); we offer installation services for this unit at our facility and can also give you assistance over the phone if needed. Q. Is it legal to increase the performance of my engine?

A. As with most performance enhancing products regulations vary from state to state. We offer this unit under the "For Off Road and Track Use Only" and encourage you to check with your local state laws to see if this unit is legal for on road use in your country/state.
